Can happen by accident, also can happen deliberately, his book shows steps to take to become guru.

People are convinced if they are good, they will become guru, often not true.

He looked at people who are gurus and he could clearly see they may not be top performer. Tom Peters is management guru; he has never run a big company.

Two step
1 -find niche or topic. I want to do e-learning (distance learning)
selectively disseminate info on topic to large audience, books articles newsletters seminars
steady stream of activity Disseminate Info

Don't have to have original material, simply
Actively frequently repetitively disseminate info

Step one - need a web site - domain name - put up site on topic.
Web site needs bio and credentials
Free stuff that people can get on this topic. Info about topic

His site has lots of stuff for free. He is mini-guru in direct mail

Step two - on home page put up a place to subscribe to free e-zine, e-letter.
Then I have their email and they are potential buyers. Offers for products and services.

Step three - GENERATE ARTICLES - DO IT FOR FREE - get serious about writing - publications that my customers read.
There is a magazine for everything. Write for free and ask them to include contact info to my web site.
Alternate to free writing is to get free advertising in exchange
Article is good, column is better.
Might get paid 1200 for four columns - instead gets ad space worth 4000
Ask for twice in ad space.

Step four - try to get to be columnist rather than writing articles.

Step five - Get on lecture circuit. Offer to do for free. Luncheons, find the organizations that relate to my field. Usually get immediate work from talking.

May be doing it and not getting results. What's the problem? Most likely not doing these things enough. Have to do it a lot. Need regular schedule.

Rule of seven - have to communicate at least 7 in 18 month period lecture, article mailing. Results may not be so good at first then you get critical mass. Floodgates open, made the big shift from regular person to mini-guru.

Have to look at what is the value I get out of something. It may not show up directly, Maybe people are reading it and after a while they call you.

He likes to do things that don't take a lot of time -

Can you take an article and use it for more than one magazine.
Write "First rights only" on cover of manuscript for articles and copyright in my name

Q- how to find groups to speak to if not business topic. Ie. Infidelity and relationships - pick one Infidelity - brainstorm - why do I want to be guru- my motive - Women's group

Best to become guru in what interests me and excites me. Needs to a market
Niche is intersection of your interest and interest of others.

Better ways than postcards and radio commercials
Better to start e-zine then go to complimentary - similar sites and get them to run it in their e-zine.

Ideally better to have one topic - this case interrelated. Can have more than one topic

Maximum niches is three, but … Has 4 hand-gliding -

Should market as one brand or two. Him as brand and his topic is sales and leadership.

Description of hundred words or less - tease them to come back and want more.
Most e-zines will specify 100 words or less and one link

Keep doing research.

Write a letter to the editor to get published

Be controversial. Take a stand. It stimulates interest.
